The Optimum Weight Loss Diet

VEGGIEPOT COLORFUL

The single most important thing we do daily is what we eat and drink, period.

Just read a dismissive comment from a guy responding to an article by Dr. Dean Ornish on the health care debate. The comment was,”Yes doctor, we should all eat our veggies. Now, can we get back to the REAL health care debate?”

The person making this comment couldn’t be more wrong. The most important thing we do every day, whether we know it or not – and few people do, including the above commenter – is what we eat and drink. Period, no debate. Everything else flows from what we eat and drink, it is of utmost importance to our physical health, mental wellness, spiritual strength and emotional well being. All of these, encompassing our entire beings, are acutely affected by what we eat and drink. What we eat and drink are everything, that is no overstatement.

The average American fails miserably at fueling their bodies and minds with the finest foods and beverages.

If we just purchased or received a top quality, hand-made, exotic automobile, and the owner’s manual instructs to fuel it with only premium fuel, we wouldn’t think of putting anything else but that in that vehicle’s fuel tank.

In the area of fueling themselves, most people take better care of their cars than they do themselves. The average American feeds themselves with junk fuels. Junk food, fast food, processed food, refined foods with added fat, sugar and salt, food which has been stripped of nutrients by processing, refining, breading, deep frying, flesh foods high in saturated fats, etc. The average person doesn’t eat or even know what a whole food is, or the most nutritious of these vital fuels.

Just as important as solid foods are the beverages we drink. Beverages now surpass solid foods, as far as junk calories go. Tufts University researchers report that beverages, mostly sugar-filled sodas and other sweetened drinks, now make up the majority of calories in the average American’s diet.

Anyone who says, “Well, unlike automobile manuals, humans don’t come with fueling instructions,” is simply wrong.

We know what the optimum diet and foods are, and are learning more every year. We know from people like Dr. Dean Ornish; T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study, and many others. The optimum diet for all around health, maintaining healthy leanness and living a long, vigorous life is a vitamin B-12-supplemented, balanced, plant-based diet of a variety of whole foods emphasizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, legumes, tubers, nuts.

No dairy, no meat, no eggs, no fish, no animal products.

This is without question the optimum diet for overall health for most people, and it is the optimum diet for losing weight healthfully and keeping weight off permanently.

Forget About Losing Weight by Exercising

WHOLE FRUITS BOWL

Fast, effective weight loss is all about the foods you're eating and beverages you're drinking. Had your whole fruits today?

God bless the morbidly obese guy struggling up the huge hill in my neighborhood recently. Undoubtedly in a misguided attempt to trim excess weight off his massive bulk. He made his assault of the hill that much more dangerous by wearing sweatpants and sweatshirt on a hot day.

Whew. I could clearly hear his labored breathing from across the broad street.

My ferociously strong and fat friend, you’re lost. You’re not going to exercise off the pounds. Not only are you trying to lose weight the hard way, what you’re doing is just downright dangerous. I’d love to discuss with a panel of exercise physiologists and other experts the specifics of what this guy’s cardiovascular and other systems were undergoing—the massive strain on his already over-burdened heart; the heat factor, all the rest.

And all in vain.

He and everybody else who wants to lose weight can do so in a much easier, much more effective way—by getting a grip on what they’re eating and drinking. It’s that simple. Forget about losing weight by exercising.

On the day I crossed paths with this poor guy, I weighed in at 191 pounds, down 16 pounds from my high weight of 207 some weeks earlier.

I lost the weight by changing my eating habits; specifically, eliminating my evening meal. I didn’t change my exercise routine, haven’t increased exercising a bit. I emphasize this because it is proof my remarkably easy and quick weight loss is a result of changing eating habits, not increasing my exercise.

So why was I out walking, exercising when I saw this guy? Getting my daily exercise high, which I love, and absolutely recommend for everybody. First, for the fantastic mental health benefits of exercise, and for the physical health bennies, including cardiovascular ones. And the emotional/spiritual benefits from outdoor exercise in fresh air and sunshine.

But exercise for weight loss? Nope. If you’re struggling with overweight, it’s all about what you’re eating and drinking, and the beverages are just as important as the solid food. We’ll learn all about all this in mauisbiggestloser. Starts Sept. 20 in Kahului.

Maui Weight Loss Beverage Tips

IMG_2552

ONE CAN OF LIQUID CANDY A DAY IS ALL IT TAKES TO ADD 15 POUNDS IN A YEAR

UPDATE After I wrote this post came proof of how accurate and timely the information in it is: researchers at Tufts University reported the astounding news that soda and sweet drinks are now the main source of calories in the American diet. A more comprehensive paper is now being developed by the Tufts researchers on their findings.

The single most overlooked cause of overweight is without a doubt our consumption of beverages.

I saw one powerful example of this this morning. In a restaurant a woman who had finished her meal stopped by the self-serve soda fountain with its selection of beverages and re-filled her container. Bingo. Bad enough to drink one cup of “liquid candy” — high calorie sugar water. Drinking two or more is a certain recipe for overweight.

There is a good chance this woman, who wasn’t slender, might complain she didn’t overeat, but was still overweight, and be mystified by why that was. I hear similar stories and the first question I ask is what do you drink during an average day? Just one or two hundred extra calories from beverages is all it takes to stay stubbornly overweight by 20-30 pounds or more.

Diet drinks are no help whatsoever. Studies suggest that chemical sweeteners used in diet beverages almost certainly cause overeating. No study has ever shown that drinking diet drinks leads to weight loss or prevents weight gain (also true of products like Sweet’N'Low and Equal).

If you’re interested in healthy weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight permanently, you have to take a hard look at beverage consumption. To understand things like studies show when subjects drink calories, they tend to consume more calories the next time they eat regular solid food. Interesting.

What all studies about consuming liquid calories have in common, to put it in unscientific terms, is that liquids go down mighty easily. I’ve always intuited this. As much as I love smoothies – what could be healthier than whole fruits blended up, nothing added, nothing taken away? – I had a feeling they were too good to be true. Now I understand they were and are – I used to greedily, blissfully down 12-14-16 ounces of smoothie, amounts that have a ton of calories.

Similarly, it is always best to eat the whole apple than to drink a serving of apple juice. Or eat an orange rather than drink orange juice. I used to drink orange juice freely; no more, and I’m no longer stubbornly overweight.

The bottom line to this whole subject: make water you main beverage. Works wonderfully for me. All my former favorite beverages like orange juice, smoothies and the rest? I make them very, very occasional treats, and really enjoy them.

Maui Fast Weight Loss

MAKE DINNER LIGHT, NUTRIENT DENSE LIKE THIS DELICIOUS BEET SALAD, IF YOU UST EAT DINNER

MAKE DINNER LIGHT, NUTRIENT DENSE LIKE THIS DELICIOUS BEET SALAD, IF YOU MUST EAT DINNER

How do I lose weight fast? That’s the most common question I hear.

Understandable question, because who wants to be overweight? Nobody, yet 2/3rds of Americans are overweight or obese. Everybody wants to lose weight, and lose it now.

Great news: anyone can lose weight instantly, immediately, now.

How? Start doing it, or rather them, now: the actions, the habits, the steps that will result in weight loss. The sooner you start doing them, the sooner you lose weight. Simple.

If you’re serious about losing weight – healthfully, permanently, the only type of weight loss I teach and recommend  – you start now and you start losing weight now. Here are 5 simple, elegant, effective, powerful ways:

1. Lose now and forever that old standby of every procrastinating wanna-be weight loser: I’ll start after the weekend. Or after the holidays. Or after my gut punches my waist size out to 50 inches – then I’ll start. No. Go the other way. Stop with the excuses and the petty procrastinations. Start developing more backbone and less wishbone. Start now, not tomorrow or the day after or next week.

2. Make water your main beverage, water, nothing added, unless it’s slice of lemon, lime, like that. But lose all the vitamin-added, sugar-added, flavor added designer waters that do nothing but separate you from your money. The don’t drink list includes sports drinks, sodas, coffee with the additions, energy drinks, any kind of diet drink – soda, ice tea, any of these pseudo-beverages. These last are worthless for weight loss; they add pounds, not take away. Water.

3. Cut out snacking. This includes forgetting advice about grazing, or eating many smaller meals throughout the day instead of 2-3 big ones. Stop eating in-between meals. If you get hungry between meals, drink water.  If you absolutely must have something to eat, make it whole fruit, an apple, orange, banana, grapes. Move forcefully toward eliminating snacking, with backbone, not wishbone.

4. Make breakfast your main meal, a substantial, healthy meal. An adjustment for most people, do it anyway. It’s the only way to go for healthy, permanent weight loss. If you just cannot adjust, then make lunch your main meal, eaten before 2-3 p.m.

5. Eliminate the evening meal. In today’s push-button world of ease and sedentary lifestyles where most of us drive everywhere, two meals are more than adequate, unless you’re a lumberjack. If you must eat dinner, make it light, healthy, nutrient dense: veggies, salad, non-cream type soup. But work on eliminating dinner – it doesn’t fit with 21st century life.

SuperFit Challenge/Maui’s Biggest Loser starts Sept. 20 on Maui, for healthy, permanent weight loss. A fun and powerful connect-the-dots program. You’ll learn to lose all the weight you want to lose. Maui Weight Loss Wonder

SCALE-07-AUG-2009

NOTHING BEATS THE SIGHT OF CONSISTENTLY LOWER READINGS ON THE WEIGHT SCALE

If you want to lose excess pounds now, there’s just nothing like weighing in every day and seeing the scale register a steady loss. Nothing – it’s just one of the most gratifying, satisfying things in life. It can make your day – and your life. I know it does mine.

One of the more fascinating things about weight loss is that losing just 10 pounds – doing so healthfully – has tremendous overall health benefits.

Check these numbers from my weigh-in chart then I’ll tell you how I lost the weight. Weighing in daily is an extremely important part of the Maui SuperFit/Maui’s Biggest Loser program. I know some say ignore the scale; my experience is the opposite: I have such a big appetite and my tendency is to eat way too much, and weighing in keeps me honest. Weigh in every day, no matter what you  have heard about “forget the scale,” or advice like that. And record your weight as well, every day, to the 1/10th pound.

My weight when I started was 207.7 pounds. At weigh in the next day: 205.6. Next: 203.9. Next: 203.6. Then 201.3

Then 199. Next day: 200.3 Next day: 199.7 Next: 201.5

Notice my weight isn’t down every day. And that is okay. The same thing will  happen to you, expect it. Here’s the second week of the program. Note that there was a 4 pound loss, from 201.5 up above to 197.9 – this was after my big Sunday exercise session of biking and jogging. Followed by slight upswing afterwards, which is to be expected, and is fine:

197.9. 199. 199.6. 199.2. 199.2

And finally: 197.6

That’s two weeks, and a total loss of 10.1 pounds. How do I feel? Ferociously fantastic. How did I achieve this steady, healthy weight loss?

I eliminated dinner. Simple, elegant and healthy. I didn’t feel deprived. Got used to not eating dinner quickly. Woke up every morning ready for a substantial breakfast, which is just what you want. This strategy works wonderfully.

We’ll learn it and other simple, healthy tactics for losing weight permanently in the Maui SuperFit Challenge/Maui’s Biggest Loser, starts Sept. 20 in Kahului. Don’t miss it.

Maui Weight Loss Breakfasts

brcky STRAWBERRIES

MAKING A NUTRITIOUS, DELICIOUS BREAKFAST YOUR MAIN MEAL OF THE DAY IS A POWERFUL WEIGHT LOSS STRATEGY

This is my breakfast from this morning. It’s the kind of breakfast I eat every morning and recommend you do too. Not this specific breakfast, but one like it: whole foods all the way. It’s quick, super healthy and leads to big time weight loss.

Overnight I soaked Old Fashioned Quaker Oats, pecans, flax seed meal, date sugar, cinnamon and raisins.

This morning I added sliced bananas and strawberries. That was my prep work this morning. Think you can fit that in your busy, rushed morning schedule? I was eating 60 seconds after I entered the kitchen. It’s that simple.

It’s called muesli, but don’t get intimidated – “Oh, I can’t prepare muesli, can’t even pronounce it!”

Anyone can make it, couldn’t be easier.

Just soak overnight a whole grain – oats in this case and the other ingredients. Whatever your favorites are.

Most people soak in milk or soymilk or almond milk, but I use pure, filtered water — works for me. I also (very occasionally) soak in fruit juice — apple, orange, etc.

The pecans could be walnuts, almonds, any kind.

Ground flax seeds I eat daily for omega-3, which I don’t want to get from fish, and it’s a very important nutrient.

I like date sugar for sweetener. I buy the dried dates and make up date sugar in my processor. Raisins same thing, natural sweetener.

Cinnamon is great anti-oxidant, very healthy and I like it.

Top if off in the morning with strawberries, banana, fruits I had. Can be any fruit – apple, blueberries, anything you like.

I never recommend eating just oats or oatmeal. It’s boring, and not all that nutritious by itself. But add all these other things and you’ve got a healthy breakfast, with complex carbohydrates, great protein and fats. The oats have fat, and pecans do too, healthy fats, non-saturated kind, and absolutely necessary for good health.

Finally, this is my main meal for the day, which is an incredibly powerful weight loss strategy, the morning meal as your main one. I’d guess it has about 550-650 calories, but I don’t count calories. I am not the least bit hungry for five hours or more, it keeps me feeling ferociously fantastic well past noontime and beyond.

There you have it – a quick, easy-to-prepare breakfast that is healthy, delicious, has great eye appeal and is a fantastic way to lose weight healthfully.

We’ll learn this and other powerful, healthy weight loss techniques in the SuperFit Challenge/Maui’s Biggest Loser, starts Sept. 20 in Kahului. If you’re interested in healthy, permanent weight loss where failure to lose weight is not an option, don’t miss it. www.mauisbiggestloser.com

Maui Weight Loser’s Dream

waterdrink

FOR LOSING WEIGHT HEALTHFULLY AND KEEPING IT OFF PERMANENTLY, MAKE WATER YOUR MAIN BEVERAGE

Can we get nutrition without any calories?
Yes, in a couple of ways. Here’s how:
Water is calorie free, and water is vitally important to good health. Maui SuperFit Challenge/Maui’s Biggest Loser urges you to make pure, filtered water your main beverage.

Water doesn’t supply nutrition, it has no nutritive value on its own.

But we can make water nutritious with tea, which packs it with phytonutrients. It’s nutrition without calories, a weight loser’s dream. Every time we drink water is a chance to make it more nutritious with tea.

The other opportunity to get good nutrition without calories is to add spices to the tea, like cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger. These spices are incredibly powerful antioxidants. Such a beverage is known as Chai Tea. It has all the tea of tea but also contains the most powerful antioxidants on the planet, which cloves, cinnamon, etc. indeed are; they’re powerful.
You can add unsweetened soymilk, along with erythritol, brand name Z-Sweet, a harmless sweetener, unlike almost all chemical sweeteners. You can also add unsweetened cocoa powder, another remarkably nutritious substance. Result: a sweet, spicy delicious beverage that has 3 full days’ worth of antioxidants per glass.

What about tea? Both green tea and black tea (like the Lipton brand) do contain caffeine, a concern for some. But like everything else, tea has to be looked at in a cost/benefit light. And the positives  of tea are many: Daily consumption of tea results in less breast cancer risk; tea drinkers live longer lives; drinking tea lessens the chance of getting ovarian cancer. It lowers cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, and protects our livers and brains.

These are some of the many benefits that lead reputable nutrition authorities like Dr. Michael Greger to recommend drinking green tea every day. Just be sure to make your own and not buy the sugar sweetened ready made kind.

And there you have it, a virtually calorie free way of getting healthy nutrients every day, a healthy weight loser’s dream.

SuperFit Challenge/Maui’s Biggest Loser starts Sept. 20 here on Maui. It’s for healthy, permanent weight loss and it is powerful, connect-the-dots program. You will learn to lose all the weight you want to lose , healthfully, permanently. Great group support, lots of fun and fantastic weight loss energy will be part of the mix. Failure is not an option. 100 % money back guarantee. See mauisbiggestloser.com for free information session schedule.
